The End of the World

Artist's Statement

In January 1995 my family and I took an adventure cruise to the Antarctic. The expedition we embarked on - Quest For The Circle - proved to be an incredible journey to a place so beautiful and pristine that it seemed almost alien. At times it felt as if we were on another planet, the power of the vast and untouched expanse being so much greater than any mere wilderness. I could not relate it to places on earth. How would I begin to compare?

The penguins, the mountains the icebergs, the lack of humans and trees made for a string of sights that ranged from picturesque to awe inspiring. Despite all of the obvious wonders around me, I was most intrigued by Antarctica's unusual light. There was a quality to it that I have never seen. It seemed as if everything was lit from within. At times you could not discern where the light was coming from. At other moments the only light you could see was like a spotlight with it's beam focused on one thing. There were moments too, when the light caused optical illusions that created bizarre horizons with icebergs hovering over the water. Even in thick fog and overcast skies there was an unusual, somewhat ethereal glow. The reflective properties of the snow, water, and ice were all aound me, the absence of dust and pollution in the air made it possible to see great distances, and the never setting sun of the austral summer allowed for round-the-clock opportunities to shoot in many conditions. I was drawn to this light, with it's possibilities, and found myself peering out of my porthole or venturing on deck with my cameras at three in the morning because something spectacular was occuring. It would be more than just saving memories for myself if I could chronicle the unusual behavior of Antarctica's light, it would be having it to give away.

In this show I believe there are times when I am successful, and hopefully because of that you will also see Antarctica's powerful, unearthly beauty. Then you will understand why I've come to think of it as another world... or at least the end of this one.
